The Preston County Health Department is now accepting applications for free or reduced dental screening and cleanings for pregnant women and pre-schoolers. The appointments will be scheduled with dentists in Preston County.
Funding for this program is provided through a grant from The Greater Morgantown Community Trust (GMCT) with support from WV Grantmakers and the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation. Funds will used to provide free or reduced rate dental exams and cleanings. Transportation to appointments can be arranged through the BuckWheat Express.
Do you know that the most common chronic childhood disease in the United States is tooth decay? More than 40% of children have tooth decay by the time they reach kindergarten. Untreated dental problems grow worse over time and can effect children's long-term health, educational achievement, and overall success.
Dental exams are important for pregnant women for many reasons. It's thought that there may be a link between poor dental health and premature labor. Studies show that a mother with dental disease can very easily spread cavity-causing bacteria to her children by sharing a spoon when tasting baby food.
