UHS Football Stadium Ribbon Cutting
September 8th, 2008
University
High School, the UHS Athletic Facilities Development Committee and the
Monongalia
County School Board are pleased to announce the opening of the NewUHS Athletic Complex. Recognition will take place this Thursday,
September 8, 2008 (for soccer) and at the UHS/Elkins home football game at the
new stadium, the first ever home game for University High School since the
inception of the football program in 1946.Superintendent Frank Devono, and Committee Chairman, Fred Horton are
slated to speak. It is expected that
some original members of the first football team will also attend.
The
4000 seat field will be known as Mylan Pharmaceuticals Stadium. Funding for completion of the project was
arranged through a 3.4 million bond issue that was based on donor contributions
and pledges held at the Greater Morgantown Community Trust, our community
foundation. Seven area banks, BB&T,
Centra Bank, Clear Mountain Bank, First Exchange Bank, First United Bank &
Trust, Huntington Bank, and Wesbanco, agreed to finance equal portions of the
deb. This arrangement allowed bids to be
let on the project for completion this fall.
The
field will be used by girls and boys varsity and junior varsity soccer, and
varsity and junior varsity football during the rest of the Fall 2008
season. In the spring the boys and girls
Lacrosse will also use the facility.
Yet
to be completed are the concession and field house or locker room facilities,
and visitor bleachers. Committee
chairman, Fred Horton, acknowledges, “We are by no means done yet. This project still has important needs. Then, there remains the completion of
additional complexes for baseball/softball/tennis and track and field/cross
country. We need everyone’s support to
make this happen but we are also thankful for what we have achieved.”
