Louis F. and Mabel Tanner DeVries Cultural Center

Annette Tanner and Stephen Tanner (donors at GMCT since 2003)  with Brian Thomas, GMCT Immediate Past-President

The Tanner name has been synonymous with the arts in Morgantown.  It all began with family matriarch, Mabel DeVries Tanner, a playwright and patron of the arts, both locally and in New York City.  Mabel was also instrumental in the 1976 donation of the ornate Morgantown Post Office building for the creation of the Monongalia Arts Center, the first truly community oriented arts center in the area.

Her sons and their families were able to honor Mabel’s love of the arts and her personal philanthropy with an additional donation of their building at 111 High Street, formerly home to the family accounting firm and now, the Louis F. and Mabel Tanner DeVries Cultural Center.   GMCT was pleased to receive the donation from Stephen Tanner, and Douglas Tanner’s family, Annette, Marc and Darren in 2006 and to be able to follow their desire for it to provide office and meeting space for area arts groups.  The building is intended to foster cooperation on basic services and a collaborative relationship.  The building will pay for itself with any profits to go to funding an endowment for on-going support to the arts.  Click here for more information on office and meeting space availability.
