UHS Athletic Facilities Development

In 2006 Monongalia County Schools was constructing a new building to replace the old University High School.  Recognizing that the school needed to be the focus of community efforts, many parents remained concerned about the lack of athletic facilities for the new property.  A committee of parents, educators and local business leaders began laying plans, but lacked a financial vehicle to accept donations and turn them into a fully functioning athletic facility.   Non-profit status, administration, and oversight would be critical and eventually led them to our community foundation.  GMCT has since been able to take a leadership role as the conduit for a 3.4 million municipal bond that built Mylan Pharmaceuticals Stadium, which opened in the Fall of 2008.   GMCT is also facilitating donation and pledge support that will be needed for some time to come.  "I don't see how we could have done it any other way," said Fred Horton, UHS Athletic Facilities Development Committee President.  "GMCT provides the credibility in the community to get it done."
